Olympic golf champion Nelly Korda takes her red-hot form to Lancaster Country Club this week as she targets a first US Open title.
The U.S. star has dominated women’s golf lately, winning six of her past seven tournaments, including the Chevron Championship in April – her second major title overall.
Unsurprisingly, the 25-year-old – who won gold at Tokyo 2020 – is the runaway world number one ahead of compatriot Lilia Vu, while it was fifth-ranked Hannah Green of Australia who pushed Korda the closest at the recent Mizuho Americas Open, losing by just one stroke. “I mean, to lose to Nelly is sad, but then it’s also Nelly Korda,” Green said. “She’s obviously so dominant right now. To feel like second behind her is quite nice.”
Korda now switches focus to coming out on top in the US Open, where a tied-eighth finish in 2022 goes down as her best showing in this major.
Last year, Korda was T64, but given her form of late she is eager not to put too much pressure on herself at the US Open.
Obviously, it’s on the top of my priority list,” she said. “I just know there is never any good when you put more pressure on yourself. Just going to stay in my bubble that week and take it a shot at a time.”
Korda is the first player since Inbee Park in 2013 to win six LPGA events in one season, and she could yet have the overall record of 13 wins in her sights, set by Mickey Wright back in 1963.
