Novak Djokovic’s Tokyo Olympics partner Nina Stojanovic has spoken out about their relationship

Novak Djokovic has shown his true colours by congratulating his former Olympics partner Nina Stojanovic – who has also opened up on the ‘ugly’ comments directed at her from his fans. The Serbian tennis stars’ mixed doubles partnership ended on a sour note after Djokovic bailed on her at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Djokovic reached out to Stojanovic for the chance to pair up and compete ahead of Tokyo, which was delayed by Covid-19. Representing Serbia, they won their opening two matches but lost out to Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev in the semi-finals.

The tournament unravelled for Djokovic thereafter, being left bitterly disappointed as he also crashed out of his singles semi-final despite having been up a set and a break. He also lost his men’s singles bronze medal match to Pablo Carreno Busta. At the time, Djokovic was trying to become the first man to win the Golden Slam (the four major slams and a gold medal in the same year) and required just the gold medal and the US Open to achieve his goal – so his defeats would have hit him hard.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, then pulled out of his final doubles match alongside Stojanovic, which was a bronze medal decider against Ashleigh Barty and John Peers, just minutes before it got underway. Having left his partner out to dry, the Serbian legend’s actions were frowned upon by the tennis community and seen as a lack of sportsmanship.

Now the former world No.81 has broken her silence on the events that transpired in the summer of 2021, stating that she has met Djokovic a few times since but that the pair have not talked about the incident. Having known Djokovic for a long time, however, she revealed that the 37-year-old still keeps tabs on her career and even congratulated her on her recent victory
