Jannik Sinner began his title defense at the 2025 Australian Open with a challenging but straight-sets win against Nicolas Jarry. Frances Tiafoe also advanced, but only after a grueling five-set battle, while Jordan Thompson secured a solid victory in four sets.
Returning to the venue where he claimed his first Grand Slam title 12 months ago, Jannik Sinner endured a tough opener. The top-seeded Italian defeated Chile’s Nicolas Jarry 7-6(2), 7-6(6), 6-1 in a match lasting two hours and 40 minutes.

Extending his winning streak to 16 matches, the 23-year-old fired seven aces, avoided being broken, and converted two of his five break-point opportunities. Sinner now faces Australian wild card Tristan Schoolkate in the second round. Schoolkate overcame Japan’s Taro Daniel in four sets.
Frances Tiafoe, seeded 17th, nearly squandered a two-set lead in his opener against France’s Arthur Rinderknech. After dominating the first two sets, the American was forced to dig deep in a five-set thriller, eventually triumphing 7-6(2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-3. His next opponent, Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, also endured a five-set battle against Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil.
Australia’s Jordan Thompson, the 27th seed, fired 18 aces and 36 winners en route to a 7-6(3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over German qualifier Dominik Koepfer. Thompson will face Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round after Borges defeated France’s Alexandre Muller in four sets.
Australian wild cards James Duckworth and James McCabe added to the home nation’s success. Duckworth dominated Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker in straight sets, while McCabe overcame Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce. Duckworth will next play Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, while McCabe faces Alex Michelsen of the USA for a spot in the third round.
