Świątek's Father received the award for his daughter. Expressive words

Iga Świątek was unable to receive the statuette for 4th place in the Sportsperson of the Year 2024 plebiscite. The award was taken by her father. – I admit that this year was a bit sweet and sour – said Tomasz Świątek on stage.

– On behalf of Iga and myself, I would like to thank you very much for this distinction. I admit that this year was a bit sweet and sour. All the commotion that has arisen around Iga has taught us even more humility. I would like to thank the coaching and management staff and all the fans – admitted Tomasz Świątek during the Gala of the 90th Przegląd Sportowy and Telewizja Polsat Poll for the Best Polish Sportsperson 2024.

Iga Świątek could not personally receive the statuette for taking 4th place in the prestigious plebiscite. The Polish tennis player is competing in the United Cup at the beginning of the year , where our team will play the final against the USA on Sunday (05.01).

Aleksandra Mirosław , the Olympic champion from Paris in speed climbing, was named the Sportswoman of the Year 2024. Świątek, currently the world’s second-placed athlete, appeared at the gala for a moment when a recording of her participation was played.

– I admit that this year was demanding for me, so I am grateful for the distinction I received. I wanted to congratulate other athletes, especially since the Olympic year is never easy. I congratulate you on your great achievements this year – said Świątek.

The words of the athlete’s father about the “commotion around her” are a reference to the doping mishap that happened to the 23-year-old in the second half of 2024. At one of the tournaments, trace amounts of the banned triametazidine were detected in Świątek’s body. Fortunately, the Polish athlete proved that she had taken the substance unknowingly by using a drug with melatonin.
