Giorgi’s lawyers said she’ll return to face tax probe
Camila Giorgi, the Italian tennis star who announced from the sport last week, was reportedly being probed by tax authorities when she quietly left her native country.
Giorgi, 32, is being investigated along with her family by the Guardia di Finanza, a government agency that specializes in financial crimes in Italy, for allegedly refusing to pay taxes or declare her full income.
Giorgi’s lawyers told ANSA that she will “return to Italy soon” and that “Camila’s withdrawal from competitive competitions has nothing to do with the affair linked to the Guardia di Finanza investigations.”
Giorgi won four WTA singles titles and was a Wimbledon 2018 quarterfinalist. She reportedly has fled Italy for the U.S. where she plans to pursue a career as a model.
Giorgi has denied reports that her surprise decision to retire from tennis last week was linked to a tax dispute and that she is on the run from the Italian authorities. She described the reports about the reasons for the retirement as “fake articles.”
The Italian tax authorities have reportedly been trying to track Giorgi down for about one month. At the moment, her whereabouts are not known, but there are reports she could be in the United States. The Italian Inland Revenue agency has reportedly sent an order for the seizure of $464,000 to the Italian Tennis Federation in relation to a tax dispute.
