Well-known Coach Doubts Andy Murray’s Skills: “He Knows Nothing About Coaching”

Gilles Cervara, coach of Daniil Medvedev, doubts that Andy Murray will be able to help Novak Djokovic from a coaching perspective. “Andy knows nothing about coaching. He doesn’t have what you could call a coaching methodology,” he said.

The news that Novak Djokovic has hired Andy Murray as his coach has sent shockwaves through the tennis world. The two great rivals, who recently competed for the biggest trophies, are now on the same team and will work towards shared success.

For Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and former ATP world number one, who retired from his sports career in July, this will be his first coaching job. Gilles Cervara, coach of Daniil Medvedev, places a strong emphasis on this fact.

“Knowing Murray, I’m not surprised. I knew that after his career, he wouldn’t be able to sit still for more than two or three months. But Andy knows nothing about coaching. He doesn’t have what you could call a coaching methodology. He’ll learn it as he goes,” Cervara said in an interview with *L’Equipe*.

Cervara believes that Djokovic didn’t hire Murray to teach him how to play. “That’s not why Novak wants to work with him. When it comes to coaching, Novak knows himself well enough that he doesn’t need anyone else or he can turn to someone in his team for help. But you always need someone to introduce you to new areas and help you discover new training methods that aren’t obvious,” he explained.

Despite Murray’s lack of coaching experience, Cervara isn’t dismissing the collaboration. “Between these two, anything is possible. I imagine this partnership will bring benefits to Djokovic,” the French coach emphasized.
