Jannik Sinner has given his verdict on the conditions at the ATP Finals after a pre-tournament practice. And his comments will be music to Carlos Alcaraz’s ears after the Spaniard struggled at the recent Paris Masters.
Alcaraz doesn’t have the best record on indoor hard courts and struggled with the fast conditions in Paris. But it looks like he won’t need to worry in Turin.
After winning his opening match at last week’s Paris Masters, Alcaraz raised concerns over the fast court speed at the tournament. And he doubled down after crashing out in the round of 16.
“This is crazy. I don’t know. Probably and the fastest one, you know, in the last ten years in this tournament,” the world No. 3 said of the court speed. “So it surprised me a little bit, so I came here with not too many days. Probably I had to came, you know, earlier to get used to these conditions but I didn’t. But, you know, honestly all I can say is I don’t understand why they did it.”
Given just how quick the Paris court was – it had a court pace index of 46.3, making it the fastest hard-court Masters of the year – it was always expected that the ATP Finals surface would be slower.
And Sinner has now revealed that the centre court in Turin is significantly slower, even more so than last year. Given Alcaraz’s recent struggles in Paris, it will be welcome news to the four-time Major winner.
Sinner has already practised with Taylor Fritz inside the Inalpi Arena. After testing the court out, he said: “We’re still getting used to it. “The court is different from last year, a little slower. Now there are still a few days to get to the top for the first match.”
After finishing as the runner-up at last year’s edition, Sinner is hoping he can lift the trophy in front of a home crowd.
