As every week on Monday morning, the WTA publishes a new ranking of the best tennis players in the world. For a long time, the top ratings have remained practically unchanged. Everything changed after the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. The results of the US Open also introduced many changes in the highest places of the ranking.
To the surprise of many fans, Iga Świątek finished this year’s US Open with a positive balance of ranking points. The Polish player finished the competition in the quarterfinals, but it was still a better result than last season, when the leader said goodbye to the US Open after losing in the fourth round.
Our player improved her impressive points tally by 190 points. In total, Świątek has 10,885 points, which gave her 120th week of reigning as the leader of the WTA ranking. The Pole is currently in 8th place on the all-time list. Next week, she will overtake Ashleigh Barty, the leader for 121 weeks, and move up to 7th place in this ranking.
The New York competition was won by the best player of the entire tournament – Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian also competed in the final of the New York Slam a year ago. This means that she gained only 700 points for winning this year’s edition. The Belarusian is still 2169 points behind Świątek.
The biggest changes happened behind the backs of the two best tennis players in the world. Jessica Pegula moved up to third place after the US Open. The American player made it all the way to the final in New York. Considering her poor result last year, the American player gained over 1,000 points in the ranking. This is almost 1/6 of her entire achievement this year.
The biggest loser of the entire tournament is the defending champion from last year – Coco Gauff. A few days ago, the American was eliminated from the New York Slam already in the fourth round. This meant a loss of almost two thousand ranking points and a drop to 6th place in the WTA ranking.
