While World No.1 Iga Swiatek‘s dream of lifting the Olympic gold medal was not fulfilled, she did take home the bronze medal, becoming the first tennis player from Poland to win an Olympic medal. Inside Court Philippe-Chatrier on Friday (August 2), she needed just 59 minutes to beat Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-1.
On August 1, Swiatek was defeated in straight sets in the semifinals by China’s 21-year-old Qinwen Zheng, who secured her spot in the final at the Paris Olympics. After the bronze medal match, an emotional Swiatek thanked her fans and vowed to do her best in the next edition of the quadrennial tournament.
I will stick with the fact that although I did not fulfill my biggest dream, for today I did everything I could to play #Paris2024 as best as I could, on my own terms. Thank you for your support and understanding regardless of expectations. I will come back to the Olympics wiser.
