Novak Djokovic withdrew from the French Open on Tuesday due to a right knee injury picked up in his five-set win over Francisco Cerundolo at the last-16 stage on Monday. Djokovic’s withdrawal means Casper Ruud will be in the French Open semi-finals. Alex Corretja, Tim Henman and Mats Wilander have all expressed their shock that Djokovic will no longer be competing at Roland-Garros this year.
Eurosport tennis expert Mats Wilander admits he has been left gutted by Novak Djokovic’s sudden French Open withdrawal, because he is desperate “to see him push the youngsters.”
The 24-time Grand Slam champion overcame physical issues to beat Francisco Cerundolo in a five-set epic on Monday to set up a quarter-final meeting with Casper Ruud at Roland-Garros.
However, on Tuesday, tournament organisers announced that Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament due to a “torn medial meniscus” in his right knee.
Wilander believes it leaves the 37-year-old’s chances of playing any grass court tennis this summer in doubt, as it can take some time to recover from such an injury at his age.
